Tackling Diabetes: ADA VIP Lunch

Today I attended the American Diabetes Association VIP lunch honoring Red Riders and recognizing Champions for Diabetes. Red Riders are the people who ride with diabetes. Champions have raised at least $500.  I am in the Champion category having raised $1,700.00 so far for Tour de Cure. I co-chair the Team Red Alabama with John Fullerton. The team is approaching $10,000 – we are at $8,868 tonight with 5 days to go until Tour de Cure. The lunch speaker was Kendall Simmons, former Auburn football player and former Pittsburgh Steeler. Kendall told us his story about living with diabetes. I appreciated his honesty about how difficult it is to live with the disease and the frustrations he sometimes experiences. Within the struggles, however, he found a mental strength to face not only the disease but his opponents on the field. (There it is again – the importance of mental strength and preparation.)

Tour de Cure is this Saturday at St. Vincent’s 119 in Birmingham.  You can still join the ride as an individual or as part of a team. If you are not in the area, you can find a ride near where you live.
