Step Out for Diabetes

Step Out is a walk to raise funds for diabetes research and to raise awareness about the disease.  On September 10 there will be a walk in Tuscaloosa.   I will be walking along with several other staff and faculty from the libraries as Team Gorgas.  (There is a Team Jackson – not me.)  Please consider sponsoring our team.

As many of you know, this is a disease that has affected me personally.  My mom was diabetic and lost her leg because of the disease.  I don’t think we really realized it at the time but many of her other health problems were related to diabetes as well.  Several other family members also have Type 2 diabetes, sometimes called Adult Onset.

The Alabama/Mississippi American Diabetes Association assisted those with diabetes following the tornadoes by providing supplies and links to medical assistance.  The signature events to raise awareness about diabetes include Tour de Cure in the spring, Father of the Year, and the Step Out walk.  Statistics predict that 1 in 3 children born after 2000 will be affected by diabetes.  The only way to change this is through education, research and awareness.

There will also be a Dine out for Diabetes event on September 1 at Mugshots in Tuscaloosa.  A silent auction from 5:30-7:30 pm will be held upstairs. Please come support ADA.
